HOW PORTAL AXLES WORK

How Portal Axles work

The standard axle found on a Bakkie or SUV runs straight into the wheel. For vehicles with large wheels that need to perform under extreme conditions, this design places too much pressure on the axles and CV Joints. Military and commercial vehicles started using portal axles to remedy this problem and now off-roaders are enjoying the benefits too.

The tube of a portal axle sits above the centre of the wheel hub. Connecting this tube with the wheel is a hub that contains reduction gears. Small gears are driven by the axle, and these gears in turn rotate a larger gear that turns the wheel. By transferring the torque in this way from a small axle to a large gear in the hub, the axle torque can be increased by around 200%, while keeping the stress on the axle low.

Portal Axels?

There are many benefits to using portal axles but what excites off-roaders most is:

SEE ALL BENEFITS

These key benefits minimise breakdowns and dramatically enhance your vehicles performance
allowing you to enjoy those grade five trails with no fuss and all the power!

To top it all off, with the ability to install a CTIS (Central Tyre-inflation System) you could have control over the air pressure in each tyre individually, allowing you to navigate a variety of different terrains with maximum manoeuvrability.

High Speed Unimog 406/416
Portal Gears

In South Africa the 416 Unimog is a popular choice to be used as a platform for a 4×4 camper. Initially the Unimog was not designed for this purpose, but rather as a heavy-duty utility and farming vehicle. Inherently the Unimog is slow and does not provide efficient and comfortable driving on highways.

We have developed a set of high-speed Portal Hub Gears with a ratio of 15:25 that will improve the Unimog speed by 24%. A standard set of gears has a ratio of 13:27.

These gears are professionally built in South Africa by a company specialising in the design and fabrication of automotive gearboxes and drive lines.

The upgrade driver gear, or “bull” gear is designed to enable installation with a bigger outer bearing that is used on later Unimog models. The bigger outer bearing ensures longer gear life under heavier loads.

The tables below indicates the increase in speed /rpm provided by the Portal Hub Gears for a Unimog fitted with 12.5 and 14.5 Tyres:
